The last couple of weeks we’ve been talking about the school districts in and around the Lynchburg area and how they stack up. So far, we’ve covered the Lynchburg City School District and the Amherst County School District and this week we’re going to do the same thing with the Campbell County School District. Once again, this is important because great schools don’t just teach; they shape futures and impact communities. So, let’s analyze the Campbell County school system. Keep in mind that once again the rankings are on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best.
One 3
Campbell County is already doing pretty good, having only one school with an overall rating of 3 and no schools receiving lower rankings. Altavista High is our only 3, with test scores at 4, academic progress at 3, and equity at 2.
Some 4’s
Brookneal Elementary, Rustburg Middle, William Campbell High and Brookville Middle constitute the rest of our low performing schools in this district with their overall ratings of 4. Brookneal Elementary has 4’s across the board. Rustburg Middle has test scores at 5, academic progress at 5, and equity at 3. William Campbell High has test scores at 3, academic progress at 5, and equity at 2. Brookville Middle has test scores at 4, academic progress at 3, and equity at 4.
5+
Campbell County has a large number of schools receiving an overall score of at least 5, these schools being: Tomahawk Elementary, Altavista Elementary, Rustburg Elementary, Yellow Branch Elementary, Concord Elementary, Brookville High, Rustburg High, and Leesville Road Elementary. Tomahawk Elementary has an overall rating of 5, with test scores at 6, academic progress at 4, and equity at 5. Altavista Elementary has an overall rating of 5, with test scores at 6, academic progress at 6, and equity at 3. Rustburg Elementary has an overall rating of 6, with 6’s across the board. Yellow Branch Elementary has an overall rating of 6, with test scores at 6, academic progress at 8, and equity at 5. Concord Elementary has an overall rating of 6, with test scores at 6, academic progress at 7, and equity at 4. Brookville High has an overall rating of 6, with test scores at 7, academic progress at 6, and equity at 8. Rustburg High has an overall rating of 7, with test scores at 7, academic progress at 9, and equity at 5. Leesville Road Elementary has an overall rating of 7, with test scores at 8, academic progress at 8, and equity at 5.
If you remember from the last couple weeks, the Lynchburg City school district was pretty disappointing, and Amherst was only a little better. So how does the Campbell County School District compare? Looking at the overall ratings, we have 8 schools that are a 5 or above as opposed to Lynchburg’s 2, and Amherst’s 3. Test scores are also looking better with most scores receiving a 6 or higher. Academic progress is also better, with most scores also receiving a 6 or higher. Equity is also a little better, with Brookville High receiving the top score in the district at 8 and almost half the district’s schools receive a 5 or higher. Between all this, it’s not surprising to find that the Campbell County School District ranks 53rd out of Virginia’s 131 School Districts, significantly better than the Lynchburg City School District at 105 and Amherst County School District at 98.
We still have our top school district in the area to cover though, so stay tuned! And once again, if you do have to live in an area with underperforming schools, I highly recommend you get involved in the local school board to help make positive improvements for your child and their classmates. If you are considering moving to Lynchburg, then I hope this post has been informative and helpful in your decision-making process. Thank you and I’ll see you next week!
